SOTA Beam SB-270

Post by 2W0PWR on Mon Jul 21, 2008 2:03 pm

Has anyone used one? Reading the write up it sound well built and with no O rings to go missing it's a big change in the older version.
I have just ordered one from Richard @ www.sotabeams.co.uk and hope to have it later this week. There is also £10. off if ordered before Aug.

Hi Paul,

Firstly I'd like to welcome you to the forum.

I have found it works great up hill tops and the build quality is good. The thing I really like about it is it's so easy to put together and dismantle.

Thanks for the reply; there are a couple of things which irritate me though, despite being quite satisfied.
1) Mine in not truly vertical in the 2m mode, the bracket being slightly offset - minor I know, but irritating
2) I am not convinced that the drawing showing the polar diagram is at all accurate. I find I am getting more contacts at virtually 90 degrees.

Thirdly, the photo which showed the connections of the feeder made it impossible to see their location. Ok mabe for an old hand, but not for a novice.
I juct chanced my luck.

All this said, very happy with it and good value for money - just needs a bit more professionalism.

Update 19/09/10: Experienced poor SWR whilst on Sota.
Examined on return home I find that the coil must be kept well away from the centre 2m element to ensure good output.
