New WAB award for 2011.

Post by daxi on Mon Dec 20, 2010 3:55 pm

WAB (Worked All Britain) are introducing a new award for 2011 only.

The new Coastal and Tidal award requires you to work as many WAB squares containing tidal water as you can. Valid squares being those shown to contain tidal water on an Ordnance Survey map.

The basic award is for 50 squares on HF or 10 on VHF.

I LOVE WAB & this looks like another one thats worth working for.

Question....

Can you log any contact or does it have to be WAB related.

Example..

I worked a station in SS 55 on Sunday, would this count or does it have to be registered WAB opo to registered WAB opo ?

Any contact with a known WAB square counts towards a WAB award. Special Event Stations for example are normally asked for a WAB Sq every hour or so.
Edited to add...Some people think that WAB collecting is a VHF only hobby, (I heard someone who should know better telling a group of adoring foundation licence holders that it was a VHF SSB award a few weeks ago.) But it can be done on any mode & on any amateur band. So whilst out driving it is legitimate to visit a Square to either collect a worked from tick or a worked another op in the Square tick & with some Squares being very rare with some Sq's that the only way many get to work someone in that square.
The WAB web site has a list of WAB standby frequencies.

It's also worth noting that the WAB definition of a Island is different to IOTA, so for example an island off the Norfolk coast which is accessable by wading through shallow water at low tide, becomes a target worth activating as a WAB Sq.

Thanks for the reply.
I just used the VHF example, I work Inter G occasionally mostly on 40m data but looking for something for when these old legs give up wanting to head up the big hills. I will get round to sending for the WAB cd in the near future.

Sorry, that was aimed at others who may read it. As I love WAB, it's nothing like contesting...It's fun & can be done any time any where & the more amateurs who realise it's a fun & only competitive if you want it to be part of the hobby, then the more WAB squares we can all work.
And I like WAB so much I even make a point of giving a few points away during the WAB contest.
WAB also do some nice QSL Cards, if anyone just wants a few to send.
