the difference between ipod touch 2nd generation and the enw

okay so i got an ipod touch 2nd generation and they came out with a new
ipod touch? i dont know if its the 3rd generation, but they say its
newer than the 2nd generation. is the new ipod touch the ipod 2nd
generation with the ipod software 3.1? or is it actually a new ipod
touch 3rd generation?

New ipod and it has now 4.0 software installed
