How many generations of Ipod touch are currently available?

I am new to the ipod touch market and while researching on the web
cannot figure out if there is a first and second generation or only a
first. I am not talking about the regular ipod, but rather the ipod
touch. I am debating on waiting for the next generation of the touch,
because i can wait and I would think there would be significant
improvements. Any meaningful thoughts is much appreciated.

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

I think there are three generation iPod touch's on the Market but not 100% sure. I say this as they tend to follow the iPhone and I'm sure I don't have to tell you we are on the iPhone 4 now. Firstly was the 2G and then saw 3G which later became the 3GS.

What I am sure about is like you said, the iPod Touch when it gets announced around September will be a whole new design. Maybe a similar look to the iPhone 4 which I am using now and will allmost for sure will have atleast 1 camera but possibly 2 for FaceTime support.
