New (to me) Yaesu 817 ND.
I think these sets have more to offer than using the scanning function on VHF/UHF.
If I can just remember what it is I might use it.

Re: New (to me) Yaesu 817 ND.
Nice radios, I have had a non ND 817 for several years & have worked all over Europe using mine with a mobile single band (mostly 20 & 80 meter) whip & a cheap mag mount total cost about £250.
To be honest I am not a fan of FM bands above 4 meters & the 817 does not cover 4 & 6 FM is empty so I rarely use my radio on anything but 80 or 20 meters, unless I'm using USB on 6 whilst mobile.
A small VHF beam gives good service for SOTA etc & a ladder line folded dipole on a tall fiberglass mast makes it a very good RAYNET radio.
I never personally use mine on the internal batteries, but use a small portable 12 volt supply, thus getting the full 5 watts when out & about.

Just took delivery of a 2010 produced ND two days ago. Excellent small piece of kit, and just made it before Yaesu up the price 15% so am delighted and works well on the longwire here

Did someone edit my post as there was a bit more to the initial post here?

Re: New (to me) Yaesu 817 ND.
It's how I first saw it. Would it not show as having been edited, if that had happened?

Yeah it would.
I run a huge forum and it does show when a post has been edited.
Oh well, maybe I was a clutter and monged it.
I was sort of saying how I enjoy the scanning side of the radio but need to use it alot more and not put faith in 100w on the 747 and have faith in QRP.

Re: New (to me) Yaesu 817 ND.
QRP means a lot more care needs to be taken with antennas & if using SSB with getting the modulation right, as it's not about signal strength on QRP it's about readability.
I have had some great QSO's were my signal strength has been nil, but where we have still managed to have a long & easy QSO as my readability was 4 or a 5.
